He returned to the island in the 70's after his retirement of 32 years of service with the Army, and with the aid of the natives found the Memorial the soldiers had erected there, with the words cut out of old tanks "least we forget those who died here." ELLIS, James Edward. 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines. He also served on Guadalcanal, new Britain, and Okinawa. His son has recorded his war memoirs and has produced a 50-page booklet filled with personal stories from these battles. Part of these memoirs have been published in the STINGER magazine (USS WASP survivors magazine). At Guadalcanal he was a part of a Marine detachment that served aboard the USS Wasp. The Wasp was sunk on Sept. 15, 1942, the day the battle of Peleliu also began - not quite his lucky day. Anyone who would like to receive a copy of James Ellis' memoirs may contact his son Joe at josephcellis@juno.com

ENGLAND, David D. 81st Infantry Division, Division Artillery. He Was either a captain or a major. He earned the Bronze Star on Palau, built airfield on Anguar. His son David believes that he received the decoration for carrying messages up and down the beach after the 81st landed, that eventually led to tanks being placed on the beach for greater firepower against a ridge above the beach. David may be reached at DvEngland@aol.com
* ENGLE, Harry Bell, PFC. 1st Division, 1st Bn. He received what should have been mortal injuries in the taking of Peleliu. He, however, spent 2-1/2 years in the San Diego VA Hospital where he underwent seven surgeries within inches of his heart (unheard of in the 40's) and finally after losing his left lung and part of his right lung, he was released. Daddy died in 1983 of a heart attack, but we have always thought how lucky we were to have had him with us for as long as we did. The autopsy performed on my father was thorough and revealed that daddy still had extensive shrapnel in his chest cavity, so much so that when the doctors tried to implant a pacemaker, they could not find his heart because it had shifted 4-1/2 inches to the right. He was in the USMC band and he often said, "One day they took my sax away and put a gun in my hand. The next day I was on Peleliu." He was a native Pennsylvanian (the Pittsburgh Airport now stands where the farm he grew up on was -- the Bell Farm), but when he married my mother, a native Virginian, he relocated. He stopped once in Saluda, VA, at the home of "Chesty" Puller, because he was in a fox hole once with my father. (I think this brave man was in everybody's fox hole.) Daddy told me once that Gen. Puller said to him, "Son, if you take the safety off of that gun, you'll really kill 'em." This was my father's only battle. He received what were deemed to be "mortal wounds" and was not expected to live. He did live and was my father, and I remain very, very proud of his service to his country. + GREER, Ron, 2nd Bn, 5th Marines, 1st Division. Ron was from Boston Massachusetts. He was a very unusual and effective leader in the second battalion. "His Irish wit and brilliance made him an usual person in the planning and implementing of the stagings for landing of the 2nd Division at Peleliu. Ron was hit by a piece of Jap mortar shrapnel within 60 seconds of his landing on the coral sand beach of Peleliu and he died in the next few hours as we were urged by him to go ahead, take charge, do what we came to do. The end for Ron came early, and yet his attitude and skill of leadership gave a meaning to why the rest of us were there and provided motivation for some of us to do better and strive to be effective fighting Marines."
